Cupping, also termed as "horn method" in ancient China, is a therapy in which a jar is attached to the skin to induce local congestion and blood stasis through the negative pressure created by introducing heat by an ignited material inside the jar. It is commonly applied for Bi syndrome. Cupping in conjunction with blood letting is indicated for treatment of acute sprains with blood stasis, carbuncles and ulcers, some skin diseases, such as erysipelas, neurodermatitic, etc.

Types of Jars 
There are three types commonly used in the clinic: glass cup, bamboo jar and ceramic cup. 
 
Manipulations 
A cup is attached to the skin surface through the negative pressure created by a fire inside the cup. Following are the five methods: fire twinkling method, fire throwing method, alcohol firing method, cotton firing method and firing method for cup laid on treatment location. 
Removal of the Cup
Generally, the cup is retained in the location for 10 to 15 minutes, in this period, the local place would become hyperemic. The cup is then removed. On removal, hold the cup with the left hand and press the skin beside the edge of the cup with the right hand to let the air come into the cup, and release cup. It is not allowed to remove the cup by pulling or turning it hard, which may injure the skin. If cupping is conducted by a big cup and the suction is very strong, the cup should be retained for shorter time so as to avoid causing blister.
